I really love this article by Christopher Raymond Brocklebank on QueensOfVintage.com on skinheads. Excellent research and well written.
Excerpt:
Skinheads have long been misunderstood. This subculture’s perceived links to far-right politics have somewhat soured their contribution to vintage style. To make claims for it is to hit a cultural nerve and be laid open to accusations of filtering out noxious ideologies in order to concentrate on aesthetics.
However, things are rarely as black and white as they seem, if you’ll pardon the expression, and while there were undoubtedly factions of racist and violent Skins – those who were afraid of everything and worked overtime pretending they were afraid of nothing – there were legions of other Skins whose way of life was a celebration not of whiteness, but of roots; they were working-class with class.

I couldn’t just walk past a magazine with such a fabulously vintage-inspired cover as new mag Freestyle Magazine. Published in Berlin, the new mag comes inside a Frisbee, which will be designed by different artists for each issue. A bit too gimmicky for me, but the fashion spreads and features look promising, I especially love the Peeping Tom photo story. Now if I would only have £15 (a hefty price dare I say!) spare I would go out at once and get myself a copy.

I’ve been so busy lately getting the QueensOfVintage.com forum set up that I have shamelessly neglected poor old Style High. I promise more posts soon!

So other than being sick (still, sniffle…) I’ve also been working on my new baby, a daily glossy online mag all about vintage, which I edit.

Not sure. But I do! Pop’s animal special issue is just great. The monkeys accessories shoot is amazing and who would have thought that Gucci can look this amazing on you while wearing a bear costume.

This month’s ‘fantastic’-themed British Vogue has got to be one of the best issues ever. I absolutely love the ‘Tales of the Unexpected’ fashion spread, which includes Tim Burton, Helena Bonham Carter and Karen Elson.

I religiously buy German fashion mag j’n'c for their excellent illustration based fashion spreads. Unfortunately, to me, their articles and many of their features are not quite on the same level as their illustrations yet, I always feel its origins as a trade magazine shine though too much (j’n'c stands for ‘jeans and casuals’). However, as far as I know, they are only on their fourth issue and things are improving each time.
Their current issue has two amazing illustrated spreads, one quite surreal and dreamy, a bit Kafka meets Frida Kahlo. The other is more edgy, raw, very Egon Schiele.

I am now also writing for Cyana Trend Land. It has all the latest on fashion, style, film, music, gadgets, art and design. And have I mentioned the online store?

Time Out did a recent feature on cheap chic in the capital. I particularly like the ‘designer sales’ category, which lists some forthcoming sample sales. Well worth a look! The list of top 20 London shrift stores was less than impressive though. A lot of the shops listed are in Camden Market, which I think is totally overpriced and full of ‘vintage inspired’ rather than actual vintage items.
