Swiss Textile Award
September 4, 2008 · 2 Comments
Swiss Textiles and the Swiss womens’ magazine Annabelle will be awarding the 9th Swiss Textile Award on 13 November to the best fashion newcomer. The winner will be given 100.000 Euros in support for press work or collection production. Six finalists from around the world were selected based on creativity, innovative potential but also previous success and commercial relevance. Former winners include Benoît Missolin, Raf Simons, Haider Ackermann and Marios Schwab.
This year’s six finalists are:
Rodarte (USA): New York based sisters Laura and Kate have largely taught themselves about fashion and started work on their first collection in their parent’s house in California. They’ve been showing their collections at NYC fashion week since 2005. Their collections are dream like and theatrical, almost like costumes for a ballet performance.

Richard Nicoll (GB): His 2002 graduate collection was bought up straight away by Dolce and Gabbana. He has since won the ‘New Generation Award’ four times in a row. His clothes are not just beautifully made but also
timeless, simple and yet striking pieces.
Cathy Pill (Belgium): The 26 year old designer has won several prizes for her collections. Her work involves bold colours and sharp graphic prints.

Toga (Japan): Japanese designer Yasuko Furuta has been showing at Tokyo Fashion Week for the last seven years. She has several stores across Japan. Her clothes are cleverly layered and draped, showing off a strict, almost geometric silhouette.

Louise Goldin (GB): Her 2005 Central Saint Martin’s graduate collection was sold in Selfridges. With her new approach to knitwear – bold, sexy, fun colours and patterns – she has managed to completely change the approach to knitwear design.
Jean-Pierre Braganza (GB): This multinational, London based designer has had international success with his sexy, edgy and cool collections.

Personally I would choose Braganza, no doubt. This man can turn the most boring and bland fabric into the sexiest garments.
